Yes I have work to do, yes I don’t want to do it.  How can you tell?  All these blogposts in one morning.
And here’s another. Sometimes the English as a race can be so up themselves. I catch myself doing up-myself things (can’t think of any examples at the mo, sorry) but today [...]

Safety razors

Some wag has postulated that at the current rate, safety razors will have an infinite number of blades by 2015.
They’re saying it’s nonsense and shows the flaw in extrapolating from inadequate data.
However I think it makes sense and will be true.

Doddery has died

Having been all academic and detached when talking about one death, here I am getting all emotional about another, and I didn’t know him either, so what’s the difference?
The difference is, every few days he would present an insight into his view of the world, it might be funny, it might be ironic, it might [...]

The death of Folole Muliaga

I suppose everyone has either already commented on the tragic death of Folole Muliaga, or have decided not to comment.
While it’s easy to blame Mercury Energy for cutting off the electricity supply for non-payment of bills when she was on oxygen assistance, it doesn’t look that straightforward to me. I have a few questions, [...]

Something funny going on

Today I had a baguette from Bordeaux Bakery for my lunch.  I haven’t had one in years and just fancied it.  My blood sugar afterwards (I am doing frequent checks this week) was 12.1.  Oh. My. God.   I won’t be having one of those again. I don’t like it going above 7 on the [...]

Poor Zinzan

I wasn’t in NZ when Zinzan was at his height, but if he was up to reading Stuff today (I think he’s otherwise engaged) I think he would be pretty miffed.
Their crap editing has once again produced total rubbish (and I quote):
He was famous for doing things on the field no other players would have even attempted, epitomized by the three drop goals he kicked during [...]

Another in my series of “I’m blogging this”
Yesterday I had a bill from Aotea Pathology for some blood tests I had done on 10 November 2006. This was part of the IUI cycle we did and as you will recall, if you are seeing a specialist privately, and the specialist orders blood tests, you [...]

Food Show Wellington

Went to the Food Show at our beloved Westpac Stadium yesterday.
First clever decision – manipulate Podna into not coming with me. He likes food and enjoys cooking, and indeed claimed to enjoy last year’s show, but he does have a tendency to say “well, I know about pickles and chutneys, so I don’t need [...]

McJobs for the McWorkers

So McDonalds doesn’t like the use of the word “McJob” to mean a lowpaid job with few prospects.  They’re saying that McDonalds staff agree they receive training that will be of benefit to them throughout their working lives, and thus they want the Oxford dictionary compilers to change the definition.
There’s so much I could say in riposte, but I will satisfy myself by pointing out that if people are using [...]

The view from another window

wintry wellington.
Saturday was glorious, weatherwise – no wind at all and beautiful bright winter sun. I was visiting a friend on Saturday and this is the view from her living room window, snapped with my weedy phone camera.

List MPs

Gordon Copeland’s resignation from United Future brings the issue of list MPs’ affiliation to the fore again.
I’m afraid I don’t get it. If you’re a list MP, you have your seat because you’re making up the numbers for your party. If you leave that party, how can you keep your seat? It [...]

The cop who brought the film to the party was the one who gave the story to Investigate, and now denies it
Words fail me.
EDITED to add: oh yes, and he was the one who was paid to spy on the Prime Minister last year.  I know this is a small country, but get real.

Help me out

We went to Palmerston North today.  We felt like going for an extended drive.
I’ve been there at 1am when it was hard to drive down the main streets through the hordes of young persons aged 15-25. It was like being at Warwick again, but with more (a lot more) mindless vandalism.
I’ve been [...]

Jane Austen Book Club

Haven’t posted for a while about books I’m reading.   Have just finished The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler.  It was an enjoyable light read.  I have only read one Jane Austen (Mansfield Park, did it for A-level, actually never read the whole thing, hated it) but also know the broad outline of [...]

Kapiti Island.
We haven’t been fishing for a long time, mainly because most of our fishing took place in the evenings and Podna’s current state of health makes being away from civilisation difficult.  But this afternoon was sunny and relatively calm, windwise, so we decided to head on out to Paekakariki Beach by the Fisherman’s Table [...]
